Afro-Fantasy, Justice, and Writing a Black Multiverse

For the last 15 years, I have written much about Black Feminism, critical studies of race, racial justice, and ethical consumption. For 2022, I invite you to explore these topics with me, within the realm of Afro-fantasy and Afro-futurism! My new book in progress is an Afro-futuristic project called Seeds of Sankofa. It is scheduled to be published by the end of 2023.

With my Seeds of Sankofa project, I'm writing about the intersections of racial justice, food, and Black maternal health justice within the context of the future of ethical foods(i.e. plant-based diets). What will these all mean if the future is still embedded in extractive capitalism and technocracy in the USA?

I use seeds as both metaphor and literally to explore the future of possibilities without forgetting the past. In order to grow seeds, we need rich soil, water, sun... which helps us birth the foods that nourish humans and other beings.

But, I also explore grief, loss, and trauma through both the supernatural and "normal". How do grief and loss manifest in multiple worlds, such as the world of soil, our human bodies, the metaphysical, and the plant world? How can we explore grief and trauma that are intimately connected to ecocide intertwined with racial and reproductive violence?

Within the pages of Seeds of Sankofa, Black women, girls, and non-binary people are the protagonists, gifted with extraordinary abilities. I have fallen in love with all my characters and their deep connections to justice...soil, seeds, water, and what it takes to birth and create for a future of sustainability and freedom.

Seeds of Sankofa will be my second published novel.
